Lumbarda wine-yards hike

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Plunging into the Lumbarda and its wines’ history
  • Hiking through fields with a view
  • Spending time in nature
  • Tasting local food and unique Grk wine

Korčula and Lumbarda have been connected throughout history which doesn’t come as surprise since they are only a few kilometers distant. Still, there are a lot of differences to be found in a such a small stretch of the island. Korčula is a historic and fortified town on the east side of the island, populated even before the Greeks. Later on it was chosen by Venetians as a spot to build the city in the shape of fishbone to serve as natural air conditioning regulating the wind flow, while its walls would protect it not just from possible attack but also from stormy and cold winds in winter. Korčula town is claimed to be the birth place of the famous Italian traveller Marco Polo

Lumbarda on the other hand is a small fishermen’s village east of Korčula and it is built around a small bay and on the mild hills behind it. Inhabited since the ancient times and rich in history it is surrounded by vineyards and sandy beaches, home to Grk – an indigenous grape sort originating from the Greek era (thus probably the name) and existing only in Lumbarda due to the particural terroir of its vineyards.

The hike takes us through old dirt roads and paths. These trails wind through the fields and grooves of olives, oaks, carobs, bearberries, cypresses…scent of herbs is at the most enchanting in springtime when most of them are blooming in all their colorful and odorous glory. Occasional old stone houses, roofless and abandoned are silent witnesses of the seasonal changes while skillfully renovated ones arrest your attention in the very moment you spot them. Every now and then view opens to imposing Sveti Ilija mountain across the narrow channel to the peninsula of Pelješac. In direction of Lumbarda olive trees give way to vines rooted in sandy soil and wonderful beaches.

A relaxed walk eventually takes us to Bire agritourism where you will have the opportunity to taste Mr. Bire’s wine Grk. Mr. Bire is one of the best Grk makers and apart of his wines, we will of course try some typical and locally produced island food.

After wine and food tasting transfer will take us back to Korčula town.
