Hike to Fairies’ spring

  • Walking through village of Žrnovo
  • Tasting local delicacies
  • Exploring natural wonder of Kočje
  • Spending time in nature
  • Getting to know about the area

This lovely hike starts and ends in Korčula. Korčula is a historic and fortified town on the east side of the island, populated even before the Greeks. Later on it was chosen by Venetians as a spot to build the city in the shape of fishbone to serve as natural air conditioning regulating the wind flow, while its walls would protect it not just from possible attack but also from stormy and cold winds in winter. Korčula town is claimed to be the birth place of the famous Italian traveler Marco Polo.

Soon after we leave the town we follow a trail that gets us to a village of Žrnovo – one of the oldest settlements on the island. Its inhabitants gravitate to Korčula but nevertheless are well into wine and olive oil making, agriculture and stonemasonry. The churches of this little village spread on a relatively large area are also a particularity coming from different visions and architectural styles. Here in Žrnovo we will make our first stop only to enjoy the most autochthonous and carefully homemade jams, olive oil and grappas in an original old stone house setting. Having satisfied our palates it is time to proceed into the field to find a trail that leads to a little and magical place known as Kočje. It is a labyrinth of strangely shaped dolomite rocks overgrown with ivy, surrounded by holm oak, fern…flora is interwoven in a most delicate way with cave-like spaces between the rocks dressed in moss seemingly hiding some primordial secrets. Although this protected area is relatively small it comes natural to spend some time exploring its green corridors, aromatic herbs or looking for the „Fairies’ spring“.

On the way back from Kočje we pass through Žrnovo again, but this time we choose a different route that will complete in a way our knowing of this serene area and take us back to the town of Korčula.

Upon request we can book a table in a konoba (tavern) in Žrnovo on the way back for some delicious local meal.

The trail is light, mostly flat without steep ascents or descents, (only Kočje part demands a little more attention).
